Player and Coach Development Program
As we talk often about in the 14th Ward, this league works because of the volunteers and coaches, and because of their commitment to putting kids first.
WARD UP!For Spring 2026, we are excited to share the launch of a new initiative that will build on that foundation: The 14th Ward Player & Coach Development Program. This program is rooted in our
WARD UP philosophy and is designed to give both players and coaches additional tools, support, and confidence - on the field and beyond it.
Why We’re Doing This
14th Ward Baseball is, at its core, a developmental, community baseball league. Our mission is to help kids learn skills, build confidence, develop a love for the game, and teach life skills.
WARD UP means Words and Actions Raise Dreams. We are…
● Developing players, not just box scores
● Supporting coaches, not leaving them on an island
● Teaching kids how to compete with effort, composure, and respect
● Creating a consistent, positive experience across all teams
This new program is a natural extension of those values, and we will WARD UP at every practice, every game, and at every swing and pitch!
Coach Development - Supporting Our Leaders
This program will provide dedicated sessions, tools, and resources to make the coaching experience effective and rewarding:
● Consistent Instruction: A shared playbook of teaching tools and language for a consistent, positive approach across all teams.
● Ready-to-Use Resources: Practical drills and resources you can implement immediately.
● Targeted Support: Guidance for navigating common challenges, especially when coaching younger ages.
Player Development - Encouraging Our Youth
Sports Emotions Management
One of the most important (and often toughest) parts of coaching young players is helping them manage emotions—both in games and at practice. Through this program, we’ll introduce:
● Age-Appropriate Sessions: For players (and coaches/parents) on what emotions are, why they show up in sports, and how to recognize and work through them. We are partnering with industry practitioners who specialize in this topic to support our goals.
● Coach Training & Tools focused on:
Managing emotional moments on the field
Helping players reset after mistakes
Supporting confidence while maintaining structure
Creating emotionally safe, positive team environments
Focused Skills Sessions
Throughout the season, we will be offering optional, league-run training sessions focused on specific baseball fundamentals, including (but not limited to):
● Pitching & throwing mechanics
● Catcher fundamentals
● Infield skills
● Outfield skills
These sessions are meant to reinforce what coaches are teaching at the team level, provide repetition with purpose, and expose players to consistent instruction across the league. Our goal is to make coaching in the 14th Ward more rewarding, more effective, and more sustainable.
What’s Next
In the coming week and months, we will be introducing several initiatives to WARD UP!
● Guest speaker at the draft to provide a message on mindset and approach
● Extended coaches meeting with training sessions and to discuss implementation of coaching plans
● Hyper-focused Skills Training sessions (4 throughout the Spring season to start)
Right after the draft and trade period, coaches will be cleared to connect with their players and parents and welcome them to the team.

Summary
“WARD UP” may be a new slogan to the 14th Ward but it has always existed in how we operate and it has always been about more than baseball.
If we:
● Teach skills
● Teach composure
● Encourage effort
● Model respect
● And support one another as coaches
…then we’re doing exactly what the 14th Ward was built to do.
